Amazon Drone Makes First Delivery

The Amazon powerhouse successfully completed their first drone delivery last week. In released video of the Amazon drone delivery, the company successfully delivers an Amazon Fire TV stick to a customer’s backyard in Cambridge, England. Amazon drone delivery testing is occurring at their Cambridge facility.

According to CNET, the Amazon drone delivered the item within 13 minutes of the customer’s order. As seen in the video above, after the order is placed the drone is packed, released onto a track to a platform for take-off and then off it goes. The customer has his own landing platform where the drone lands to drop off the package before returning to base.

The order was part of Amazon’s new Prime Air service. As of now it’s only open to two customers who happen to be close enough to Amazon’s Cambridge Facility. Amazon hopes to spread the service in the future to many more. The service will offer safe Amazon drone deliveries in 30 minutes or less. Their first step to expanding will be widening their customer reach near the Cambridge facility.

Amazon says the drones operate autonomously, flying to their delivery points without assistance thanks to GPS guidance. The Amazon drone can carry packages up to five pounds.

We can only hope that such services will come to the U.S. soon, but first the FAA will have to legalize drone deliveries. For now we’ll just watch the future unfold in front of us in awe.
